Boundless Love: Tonglen and the Four Immeasurables
We're living in times where it's easy to lose heart. We may feel pained, angry, afraid, and all the rest. We long to heal, to help, for relief and more. This can either isolate and depress us, or connect and awaken us, shining out from there.
This transformation starts within ourselves, and has been practiced for millennia through the best and worst of circumstances, empowering practitioners to embrace our pain and transform it into love and freedom. We can do it too.
The practice is called "tonglen", or "sending and taking", and is used to deliberately bring up the wounds and suffering within ourselves and others as we feel ready, to offer what's needed to heal, and to be free.
In a complementary way, we can also proactively generate the boundless love (metta), compassion, joy, and equanimity that we need for our own well being and strength, connecting to a greater whole, radiating out to everyone. These are called “The Four Immeasurables”.
