Death, Dying, and the Pure Land
An Eight Week Online Course
Live on Zoom & Recorded in HD to Watch Whenever You’d Like
Tuesdays 17 February - 7 April, 6pm - 8pm Mountain / 7 - 9 Central
Embracing death can bring the greatest freedom, because it teaches us that nothing was ever solid. Dancing with this flow, we can live our best lives now.
Truly, we’re always in a state of change, death, and rebirth, whether it’s going through job loss or career transitions, family or relationship changes, losing loved ones, or just new chapters in life. In its own way, society as we’ve known it is going through this too.
That doesn’t mean it isn’t scary, messy, or that we don’t grieve. There’s room to embrace all of that, bring it to our paths in healing ways, and move through it.
The notion of Pure Land in Buddhism is life and death not as a projection of fear and confusion, but as a display of wisdom and sacred journey of awakening. We always have refuge, and we’re on our way home.
Over eight weeks, with abundant guided meditations, recordings to use at home, readings, my teaching and support, and discussion with each other, we will learn:
How to prepare for our own death to liberate our lives now
Meditation practices we can use now and when we die, with detailed guidance
How to support others through their death and dying journey
About “bardos” or “intermediate states”, the constant flow we’re in, including death and rebirth
How to work with grief in healthy and healing ways
About Pure Land in Buddhism, with mantra, visualization, and ritual of Amitabha Buddha
Simple and profound ritual practices we can do for others who have died
Course Readings:
Peaceful Death, Joyful Rebirth by Tulku Thondup Rinpoche
How We Live is How We Die by Pema Chodron

“Solid Online Buddhist Study Experience
I recently completed one of Loden's eight-week online courses and wanted to share my experience for anyone considering his teachings.
**What I appreciated:**
**Experienced Teacher**: Loden brings over 15 years of monastic experience and formal Buddhist training. His time at Gampo Abbey and Drala Mountain Center really shows in the depth and authenticity of his instruction.
**Practical Format**: The Zoom classes work well - recorded in HD so you can revisit content or catch up if you miss a session. The recordings are helpful for reviewing meditation instructions and key concepts.
**Accessible Approach**: Complex Buddhist teachings are presented in a way that's understandable for modern practitioners. Loden has a gift for making ancient wisdom relevant to contemporary challenges.
**Reasonable Pricing**: The sliding scale tuition makes quality dharma instruction accessible. This isn't about profit - it's about sharing the teachings.
**Supportive Community**: The private discussion forum creates connection with fellow students, which adds value to the solo online learning experience.
**Areas that worked for me:**
- Clear meditation instruction with guided practices
- Practical tools for working with difficult emotions
- Integration of study with contemplative practice
- Emphasis on daily practice that fits real life
The courses provide a good foundation in Buddhist meditation and philosophy. Loden creates a welcoming environment for both beginners and those with experience. If you're looking for authentic dharma instruction in a convenient online format, these courses deliver solid value.
Worth checking out if you're drawn to serious Buddhist study with a qualified teacher.” - JS
